Turnitin: How To Use The Platform Safely

Turnitin is a portal that has an application that checks for plagiarism. Most of the time, the platform works hand in hand with universities to check the assignments of their students.

Everybody including me always wants to find the easy way out of things. That includes copying pieces of research works to make up our projects or assignments instead of writing them from scratch.

With Turnitin, there is no way one can copy pieces of texts for their assignments or project works.

How It Works

When a student or lecturer submits an assignment to the platform, Turnitin will check the assignments against millions of research works in their database. It will then score the assignments depending on which parts of the writeups are copies or similar to other research works.

The platform checks each word in your assignment and displays the corresponding sources that your assignment is similar to.

Based on UniSA’s rules, your similarity index score shouldn’t be more than 5% from a particular source. Note that the score is not a plagiarism index but a similarity index. It means that the higher the score, the higher the similarity.

In most cases, if the score is too high, you must rewrite and upload the assignment again.

While similarity score is pardonable under certain circumstances, blatant plagiarism is completely unacceptable. Explaining the write-up in your own words is key to avoid plagiarism.

Turnitin Login Procedure

If you get admission to study at the University of South Africa, you are automatically enrolled on the Turnitin platform. This means that you don’t have to register for it by yourself.

The platform is linked to your MyLife Email address. That is where everything about your assignment will be sent.

Follow the Turnitin login procedure below to submit your assignments.

  • Go to http://www.turnitin.com/ in any web browser.
  • Click on the Login button usually at the top right corner of your screen
  • Enter your Username and Password
  • If you are logging in for the first time, you will have to answer a few questions. This includes selecting a secret question and answer that will help you reset your password later.
  • Click the “Next” button after that. That is it, you should successfully log in.

If you are having any issues with the login procedures, kindly send an email to Turnitin@unisa.ac.za.
